Park Chan-wook is a highly esteemed South Korean film director, screenwriter, producer, and former film critic. Born on August 23, 1963, in Seoul, he is widely regarded as one of the most prominent filmmakers in South Korean and world cinema in the 21st century. Park’s films are known for their exceptional cinematography, framing, dark humour, and often brutal subject matter, which have garnered him critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base.

Park’s career took off with his first major critical and commercial success, “Joint Security Area” in 2000. This film became the highest-grossing South Korean film at the time and paved the way for his subsequent works. He gained international recognition with the release of “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance” in 2002 and “Oldboy” in 2003. Both films received widespread critical acclaim worldwide, with “Oldboy” even winning the Grand Prix prize at the Cannes Film Festival. These movies, along with “Lady Vengeance” in 2005, form the unofficially titled “The Vengeance Trilogy,” which explores the futility of revenge and its destructive consequences.

In 2016, Park’s psychological thriller “The Handmaiden” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews. The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or and Queer Palm and won the Vulcain Prize for the Technical Arts. Park’s latest film, “Decision to Leave” (2022), earned him the Best Director award at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or.

In addition to his Korean-language works Park has also ventured into English-language filmmaking. He directed “Stoker” in 2013, starring Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska, and the television miniseries “The Little Drummer Girl” in 2018, based on John le Carré’s novel. These projects showcased Park’s versatility as a director, successfully navigating different languages and cultural contexts while maintaining his distinctive style.

Throughout his career, Park has formed strong collaborations with talented individuals in the film industry. He frequently works with screenwriter Jeong Seo-Kyung, who has contributed to several of his projects, including “The Handmaiden” and “Decision to Leave.” Park has also established a fruitful partnership with music director Jo Yeong-wook, who has composed scores for many of his films. Notably, cinematographer Chung Chung-hoon has been a key collaborator, capturing Park’s atmospheric and visually stunning vision through exceptional lighting and camera work.

Park’s films often feature top-tier acting talents, including Choi Min-Sik, Song Kang-ho, and Lee Byung-hun, among others. These actors have repeatedly worked with Park, contributing to the success and critical acclaim of his films.

Beyond his filmmaking career, Park has made notable contributions to the South Korean film industry. In 2004, he co-founded the filmmaking company Moho Film, which has participated in the production of films like “Snowpiercer” (2013) and “The Handmaiden” (2016).
