Arthur Conan Doyle | Biography & Books

Arthur Conan Doyle, born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland, was a physician and writer best known for creating the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes. Educated at Jesuit schools and the University of Edinburgh, where he studied under Dr. Joseph Bell—a key inspiration for Holmes—Doyle began his medical career before turning to writing. His first major success came with A Study in Scarlet (1887), introducing Holmes and Dr. Watson, characters who would define detective fiction and influence authors like Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler.

Beyond Holmes, Doyle wrote historical novels, science fiction, and plays, and became an outspoken spiritualist in his later years. He maintained friendships and rivalries with contemporaries like Oscar Wilde, who helped popularize Holmes when they were both published in The Strand Magazine. Knighted in 1902 for his contributions to literature and public service, Doyle died on July 7, 1930. His legacy endures as a cornerstone of the mystery genre, with countless writers and adaptations drawing inspiration from his work.
