Summary of “The Mysterious Affair at Styles”

“The Mysterious Affair at Styles” by Agatha Christie is a classic murder mystery novel set in England during World War I. The story revolves around the death of wealthy widow Emily Inglethorp, who is poisoned in her bedroom at Styles Court, a country estate. The prime suspect is her husband, Alfred Inglethorp, who is believed to have poisoned her in order to inherit her fortune. However, Hercule Poirot, a retired Belgian detective, is brought in to investigate the case and soon discovers that the truth is far more complicated than it initially appears.

The novel is narrated by Captain Arthur Hastings, a friend of Poirot’s who is staying at Styles Court at the time of the murder. As Poirot begins his investigation, he uncovers a web of lies, secrets, and motives among the residents of Styles Court. The suspects include Mrs. Inglethorp’s pharmacist husband, her stepson John Cavendish, her maid Dorcas, and a number of other guests who are staying at the estate.

As the investigation progresses, Poirot uses his unique deductive skills to piece together the events leading up to the murder. He discovers that Mrs. Inglethorp was about to change her will, which leads him to suspect that the motive for her murder was tied to her money. Poirot also learns about a mysterious chemical substance that was found near the murder scene and the fact that Mrs. Inglethorp had a mysterious and unexplained argument with her husband the night before her death.
